about

On March 20, 2020, a week after shelter-in-place began, I sat down on my bed feeling completely overwhelmed. Seeking to feel better, I asked myself, “what do I need to hear right now?” My inner response was: “it’s ok to feel alright and not alright at once.” That permission—wherever it came from—inspired me to stay present with the feelings of fear, anxiety, and grief that were in my body. Over the next hour, this song began to pour out—lyrics, melody, and chords arriving all together.

There is no need for me to elaborate on how emotionally saturating this time has been. Many have felt the rollercoaster. The intense darkness and the emerging light. The mountains of anxiety and the moments of enhanced connection. The collapse of structures and the harrowing process of rebuilding. Many have felt the waves of courage to feel and the pulls of avoidance away from feeling.

It feels like we’re still only at the beginning of a time of major transformation. If you’ve seen no light in this time, this song is especially for you. My intention is that it encourages you to stay honest—about what’s right, what’s wrong, and what you don’t know. There are many ways to heal, and many things that need healing, but to me, the only way to make lasting change is to walk humbly through it, together.

May these changes, losses, and hurdles continue to wake us up and move us forward with clear minds and hearts.

lyrics

It’s like it’s not alright
But it’s not all wrong
It’s like there’s so much light
And the light’s all gone
It’s like the end’s in sight
And it has just begun
Well do I have it right or do I have it wrong?

Sometimes it’s hard to trust what you cannot see
Sometimes I still hold on to fearful parts of me
I used to raise my hand before I knew what to say
I think I taught myself that not knowing is ok

Cause I’ve been digging digging digging my roots up to see if I’m well
And I’ve been spinnin spinnin in circles to break my own spell
Maybe I can’t do it alone, maybe I need you
To help me see how I’ve been wrong, cause I really need to

And there comes a point when you know what you need
When it’s time to burn and when it’s time to feed
You can turn away, you can drag your feet
But we cannot escape what we are here to see

Cause we’ve been digging digging digging our heads down deep in the sand
And we’ve been rushing rushing around so we don’t have to land
Now we see we’re not alone, we are all grounded
Now that there’s nowhere left to run, we are surrounded
What will we do?

cause though it’s not alright
It’s really not all wrong
Cause there is so much light
And it is always on
Maybe the end’s in sight
Maybe we’ve just begun
Well do I have it right or do I have it wrong?
And if the end’s in sight, we can take it on
