On March 20, 2020, a week after shelter-in-place began, I sat down on my bed feeling completely overwhelmed. Seeking to feel better, I asked myself, “what do I need to hear right now?” My inner response was: “it’s ok to feel alright and not alright at once.” That permission—wherever it came from—inspired me to stay present with the feelings of fear, anxiety, and grief that were in my body. Over the next hour, this song began to pour out—lyrics, melody, and chords arriving all together.
There is no need for me to elaborate on how emotionally saturating this time has been. Many have felt the rollercoaster. The intense darkness and the emerging light. The mountains of anxiety and the moments of enhanced connection. The collapse of structures and the harrowing process of rebuilding. Many have felt the waves of courage to feel and the pulls of avoidance away from feeling.
It feels like we’re still only at the beginning of a time of major transformation. If you’ve seen no light in this time, this song is especially for you. My intention is that it encourages you to stay honest—about what’s right, what’s wrong, and what you don’t know. There are many ways to heal, and many things that need healing, but to me, the only way to make lasting change is to walk humbly through it, together.
May these changes, losses, and hurdles continue to wake us up and move us forward with clear minds and hearts.
